Heather Young is an Assistant Professor in Design and Dynamic Media at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, Canada. . She holds a Master of Design in Fashion and Textiles from the Glasgow School of Art in the UK. Her practice brings together research and making, focusing on material and craft histories, sustainability, and community. Working across textiles, natural dyeing, weaving, and basketry, Heather engages with place-based processes rooted in local materials and seasonal cycles. Her work explores how traditional knowledge and ecological practices can inform contemporary design, while reflecting on how craft histories have been disrupted, transformed, or reimagined over time. Through hands-on experimentation and critical inquiry, she investigates the role of materials—especially plant-based fibers—as carriers of cultural memory and as tools for building more sustainable and connected futures.
